I got a surprise phone call this morning, which ended me up in the press BMW M3 until Monday morn’. It’s blue-on-orange, with the M Performance exhaust and double-clutch ‘box.

Will do photos, and maybe a short report, but no, I won’t be doing drifts on a closed circuit, nor will i do launches and quarter miles. That’s what !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . I have already driven it in downtown traffic, and will do a night trip to the hills and a cross-country trip with the family during the weekend.

So is there something specific you want me to try and find out about the car?

well i can tell you it’s not bad around town, though it’s probably thirsty, and the gearbox isn’t the most comfortable with pootling around traffic at 10 km/h . But coming up are packing it with stuff and kids, so we’ll know more later.

Stuff and kids. Quite the test there.

Weeeeell I could say I laid the plans for the weekend before i got the car, because that’s true, but fact of the matter is my kids love speed and hoonage, so would get them aboard anyway. But then I will also get a bicycle for one of them tomorrow, and that will have to fit in the trunk. No idea, if it will, but I’ll be damned if I don’t take the M3 anyway.

Take the wheels off. That might work.

Yes, I’m planning for that, packing wrenches.

Are you all of a sudden instinctively compelled to park across multiple parking spots?

Very good question, and no, I’m not, on the contrary - i had to park just next to a disabled park place today, and took great care to leave more than enough room if anyone wanted to park there. No weaving around lanes either. I’m much more of a model citizen in this than in my own 505.

Never took my shades off tho.

Maybe a Vs test against other generations if possible. Also, can it off road better than a crossover? And try hypermilling it. That would be entertaining.

Wait, are you saying that the M performance exhaust is an OPTION on the M3?

Will it baby? Not sure how old your kids are but it’s a serious question. We have an E92 M3; it was always my dream car. Baby came along and the car seat would not fit. So I got an E60 M5 (which as it turns out is actually my dream car and man does it baby way better). But now my wife won’t sell the M3 because she loves it. So we’re Two Ms and a Baby (new username?) and I feel guilty, people with new babies are not supposed to have this much fun in their garage. Is the new M3 > e60 M5 + e92 M3?

In normal mode, no. If you switch to Sport Plus mode on the gas pedal settings, then the butterfly valve opens up the exhaust, and then it goes to 11 - i giggled at every squirt of the gas and cried out loud under every overpass. Awesome.

I will measure consumption, just topped it up and reset everything an hour ago. Not sure about off-road though....

And sorry I don’t have access to previous generations. I did drive the current M5 two years ago, and this is way more fun, feels faster too, although probably isn’t, at least not in a straight line. In short, the size different shows.

I don’t know... yet. My kids are not babies anymore (10, 8, 5), but will have to sit in all three, so we’ll see how they fit. The seat seems very deep in the back, not much legroom before it though, and the M seatbacks are hard. It does however split-fold, and those blinds in the trunk are 120cm long.

I’m not sure what to think. I seem to recall they mentioned it as news at a recent press event, but then on the options list there’s no such box to tick. Probably just some small change in the design?

Ah, gotcha. I would laaaaaaugh if a dealer tried to charge me extra for an M exhaust on an M!

(Not that I’m baller enough to actually buy a new M3. But in this scenario maybe I put on my nice jeans and went for a test drive and now I have to suffer through a sales pitch.)

The car comes with the normal ///M exhaust from the factory but you can get a dealer installed M-Performance Exhaust I think. Probably just louder.

What are a couple features in the car that you would like to see in other models?

Razor marketing approach: //////M exhaust.

I would say that it’s good only performance cars are like this, would diminish our choices greatly, if every other car had the same features. However, there is one thing: you can change how loud the exhaust is on this (and on a lot of Ferraris and Aston Martins and the like) and that’s something i would even like on a three-cylinder city car. When you are having fun, then louder = better, whatever your motor.
